STOP & GO

The first installment of Stop & Go was an 80-minute program of short works that highlighted the process of stop-motion animation in its many forms. The artists in the program breathed new life into magazine cutouts, homemade drawings, everyday objects and even the body itself. The program premiered at the Electric Works Gallery in San Francisco in 2008, and then toured throughout the United States, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Croatia until the summer of 2010. The audience was often treated to a Q & A session with artists in the program or heard live musical accompaniment by Melinda Stone. At some venues stop-motion workshops were offered as well.

STOP & GO RIDES AGAIN

Curated by San Francisco filmmaker and visual artist Sarah Klein, Stop & Go Rides Again follows a tremendously successful European and American tour of the stop-motion animation series Stop & Go. A diverse collection of stop-motion animations by Bay Area and international artists unveil their most recent experiments in animation and comment on everything from the simple beauty of a rubber ball to the history of evolution. In these films, the artists and filmmakers delve into the labor-intensive process of stop-motion animation by manipulating everyday materials by hand—such as colored paper, photographs, toys, cardboard, fabric scraps and even facial hair—to create optical experiences, cardboard creatures, shadow puppets, and a handy how-to on making homemade hooch.

STOP & GO RIDES AGAIN - exhibition

The exhibition accompanying the Stop & Go Rides Again screening program examines in greater depth the connection between the artists' primary practice of painting, drawing, sculpture or performance and the processes used to make their animations.

In the spring of 2011 the Stop & Go Rides Again screening program toured along with an exhibition of physical artworks in the Netherlands and Germany. The entire exhibition was small enough to fit into a small portfolio and suitcase and was curated by Mel Prest.

For the homecoming exhibition of Stop & Go Rides Again at Z Space in San Francisco several of the local Stop & Go Rides Again artists made site specific, large-scale works and performance-based works for the space.
